Home Design Tips – What is Art Deco Design?

Definition of Art Deco: a popular design style of the 1920s and 1930s characterized especially by bold outlines, geometric and zigzag forms, and the use of new materials (such as plastic). We would like to give you a few tips if the Art Deco features fit will with your personal sense of style. You can create a style that stays true to the original style yet feels appropriate for the 21st century. Art Deco came into being between two world wars. There was unseen level of technological innovations as well as a strong commitment to self-expression.

Are Deco Starts with Bold Color

The color palettes are not for the faint of heart. Opulence is the keyword that drove most of the movement’s aesthetic choices. You can choose your favorite neutrals but opt for saturated versions. Creamy whites, chocolate browns and black will be good basic colors but then finish with bold accent colors. Or another option is less restrained. the walls, furniture, floor covering and accessories all decked out in rich shades. Deep yellow, reds, greens and blues are indicative of the period. Limit yourself to three or four shades and use them in varying degrees throughout the room.

Incorporate Shapely Furniture

Art Deco’s retro vibe embraces weighty, almost oversized pieces. Don’t be afraid to choose the scale that works best for you. Elegant shapes are shown through the furniture used to fill a space. Incorporate pieces that set a curvy body on top or angled legs. Finish is also worth noting. It is not uncommon to see furniture that has an ultra-shiny finish. Look for pieces that have been topped with mirrors or accented with polished metals.

Add Geometric Patterns

If you’re looking to really make a statement, a bold geomentic pattern makes excellent details on a floor, as pictured above, on in a kitchen back splash. If you’re not ready to make such a permanent choice, textiles are another natural choice. Think about adding one of these patterns into the room through a rug, a blanket or some throw pillows. You could also layer one or two of these options to give the room a particularly luxurious feel.

Add Accessories Reminiscent of the 1920’s and 30s

Popular themes of that era included nude female figures, animals, foliage and sun rays. Additionally, artifacts from other cultures were also in fashion, especially those of Native American and Egyptian heritage. Natural elements like jade, ivory, obsidian and rock crystal were in vogue at the time, as were chrome and silver finishes. For best results, focus on pieces — especially mirrors, lamps and wall art — that combine two or more of these details.

While the influences of design in decor, fashion, and architecture had a glitz and glam appeal, the ability for mass production in the 1930’s brought about a sense that anyone could achieve the Art Deco look. Just like your interiors, the Art Deco style is for anyone who wants to bring the roaring appeal for arts and emergence of discovery and bold lifestyle choices into their interiors. Art Deco design is a blast from the past. Use the tips in this post to help you use Art Deco inspiration to create a truly contemporary look.
